Austrian Silver Gem-Set Enamel and Lapis Ostrich Figure -- 27 in, 69 cm

Unavailable

Our realistically modeled figure of a desert ostrich from the late 19th century measures 27 in (69 cm) tall and is attributed to the master Viennese silversmith, Hermann Bohm (active 1866-1922).

It is decorated with veneers of lapis lazuli stone and enameling on the neck and head, wings with bezel set rubies, garnets and amethysts, the tail encircled with ruby-set silver band, with a lapis veneered lid with later silver ostrich finial, and is mounted on an octagonal-shaped base decorated with enamel floral motifs and rubies.  The head/neck of the ostrich and lid are removable.  Weight: 7390 g; 260.67 oz; 16 lbs 4.6 oz.  Apparently unsigned.

In good condition. There are enamel restorations and scattered enamel chip losses.  There are small drilled holes to the wings and tail feathers, possibly where gems were originally mounted and are now missing.

Additional images forwarded upon request.

For a similar, but significantly smaller (15 in, 38 cm tall) ostrich figure by Bohm, see lot 150 of the Sotheby's sale in London on November, 13, 2020, which closed at 32,760 GBP (43,197 USD).
