South Carolina Gullah Sweet Grass Basket with Handle Vintage

South Carolina Lowland Gullah Sweet Grass Basket with Handle.    It is footed and the handle is with three pieces.    This one is vintage made by a skilled artisan from the area.    Include are several newspaper articles about the history of the Gullah people and the making of these wonderful historical traditional baskets.    The art of weaving sweet grass baskets has been passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, through the Gullah community who descended from those West African slaves.   Although these days the sons are also learning the trade.

This one is 9.5" in diameter and 11.5" including the handle.     The condition is good but it does have wear showing.  Some of Palmetto strands are broken here and there.  However that issue does not really detract from the loveliness of this basket that is handmade.     You will certainly feel good about owning a piece of Black American History that goes along with the authentic traditional basket.
