Perhaps the finest Authentic Hornbill Statue from a Sarawak Traditional Dayak Settlement / Rumah Panjai / Longhouse.
The Sacred Burung Kenyalang originated from the Sri Aman District(about 2.5hours from Kuching city where I live) and belonged to one of the longhouses then, decorated with tied motifs of Tree Of Life(towering colorful back of the bird) and a WWII warrior soldier(with various medals), flanked with his other family members at the tail of the hornbill. Tip end of the tail is decorated with a miniature Pua Kumbu / ritual cloth of a Petara Spirit, this protects the living from the dead.
Im estimating the sculpture to age between 1946-50, of which the sculpture was made to honor the hero after the 1945 holocaust.
A detachable bird. Excellent aged condition, damage free.
