1787 US Colonial Machin's Mills Copper Halfpenny GEORGIVS III Fine to Very Fine. Large date, Breen # 995, page 97 of his Complete Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Coins. The obverse legend is very clear and you can clearly see the mailed bust and the central portion of the laurel wreath. The obverse grades Fine. The reverse is stronger with nice detail despite being struck from worn dies, thus making the strike very soft. The date and reverse legend are very distinct. The coin was cleaned a long time ago, more so on the obverse than the reverse, but is starting to naturally retone. Machin's Mills coppers are much scarcer than you would think. Machin supposedly struck at least 60,000 pieces but as they are so difficult to locate today, many had to have been damaged, destroyed, used as the undertype on later Colonial coppers, or just plain melted for the intrinsic copper value. This issue was minted in what is now Newburgh, New York upstate. You will be happy with the quality, the scarcity, and the price. Satisfaction guaranteed.
