CHURCHILL, Alfred Vance, "114th Street Elevated" (so inscribed on reverse), oil on artist board, approximately six inches by eight inches, 13 inches by 17 inches framed. Born at Oberlin, Ohio, in 1864, A V Churchill traveled to Paris to study art there at the renowned Academie Julian, where he became directly involved in the flourishing Impressionist Movement. He returned to America to become Art Director of Iowa College (1891 to 1893), then Professor of Fine Arts at Columbia University in New York from 1893 to 1905. Having contributed significantly to the world of art in creation and instruction, Churchill died in 1949. This highly atmospheric scene of winter twilight in the city was painted during his years at Columbia. Superb condition.
