Paris: American Impressionist Painting

This oil on artist's board, by noted American Impressionist Adolf Berson, portrays a winter day in Montmartre, with two figures walking down the hill between low buildings and fences, the famous windmill of la Galette rising in the background. Signed in lower right corner "Berson." It is inscribed on the back, "Moulin de la Gallette (sic), Paris Snow, 1926." It is in excellent original condition. Approximately 5-3/4 inches by 8-7/8 inches, 8-1/2 inches by 11-1/2 inches framed. BERSON, Adolf (American, 1879 to 1971) Born in San Francisco to French parents, Berson received his early art training there at the Art Institute. He sailed for Europe in 1904, where he studied under Lefebre and Robert-Fleury at Paris's Acadmie Julian. During his long stay -- 22 years - in Paris, he received high praise from art critics, as well as an invitation to exhibit at his own country's Carnegie Institute. He returned to San Francisco in 1926, where he continued to paint until the 1940's. He is acclaimed for his sun-filled landscapes, and for his still-lifes of flowers and fruit.
